Glasi Hergiswil

Rich in history, the "Glasi" is the oldest glass works in Switzerland. But novelties have their place here as well. Highlight: the country's only glass labyrinth.

Formed by Fire
This lively exhibition tells the story of glass and of the "Glasi" in Hergiswil. Light and sound lead you through a labyrinth of carefully staged rooms; it's almost like walking into a movie or a time machine. You learn how the Glasi developed its craft and coped with economic highs and lows. You also find out about Roberto Niederer, the passionate glass artist who rescued the factory.

Phenomenal Glass
With the help of more than 70 hands-on experiments, come and explore glass in all its facets. Make music using glass instruments and marvel at optical illusions. Discover modern uses for this ancient material, or play an old-fashioned game of marbles. Outside, children will especially enjoy the lakeside fountains, the quartz sandbox and the huge slide.

Glass Jewels
This antique glass collection of "Flühligläser" dates back to the 18th and 19th centuries. With more than 250 bottles, glasses and decorative objects, it is the largest such collection in the world. Adjacent to the display, you can watch the glassblowers at work.

Hands On
You can also try your own hands (and mouth) at glass-blowing. First, a factory employee prepares the molten glass and attaches it to a pipe. You can then blow the red-hot lump into a glass ball. After a 15-minute cooling period, the ball is ready to take home. However, glass that hasn't spent hours in a cooling oven is fickle. This unique souvenir might break the next day or year; then again, it may last a lifetime.
