Christ Child of Sarnen
The Christ Child of Sarnen is a Gothic wooden sculpture from the 14th century. It measures 50 centimeters in height.
Adored by believers, the statue makes the Benedictine convent in Sarnen a highly popular pilgrim destination.
As a part of their prayers, the nuns place letters full of believers' worries and wishes at the feet of the figure.
The positioning of the sculpture is interesting: Baby Jesus rests his right leg on the globe while pointing to his heart with his left hand.
According to religious regords dating to 1634, this unusual position is attributed to an ailing sister who was unable to attend Christmas Mass.
Depending on the liturgical season, the Christ Child is dressed in various robes. His wardrobe includes pink moiré, white linen and multi-colored silk as well as dark red velvet decorated with metal ornaments. The latter was part of a gown that Queen Agnes of Hungary gave to the sisters in 1364.
