Fort Fürigen

Take the opportunity to visit Fort Fürigen in Stansstad.

Experience how officers and soldiers once lived and worked in tiny passageways and rooms carved into the rocks.

From the outside, you'd never suspect that one of the cliff surfaces between Stansstad and Kehrsiten isn't real. Instead, it's camouflage for the entry to Fort Fürigen.

A 200-meter tunnel system leads into the mountain. Alongside emplacements for cannons and machine guns, you'll find a labyrinth with bunkrooms, a kitchen and an operation room.

Historical background
Fort Fürigen was built in 1941/1942, in the middle of World War II. The Swiss military feared a German invasion, so it withdrew into the easier-to-defend alpine area. This was one of many forts built in cantons Nid- and Obwalden. Most forts were shut after the end of the Cold War.

Museum
Fort Fürigen has been a public museum since 1991.
