Wirzweli - Horn - Gummenalp - Wirzweli


This route offers nature's winter finesse: peace and quiet, snowy forests and mountains. You may even spot the tracks of a fox or a rabbit. The trail starts at Restaurant Arviblick. Heading away from Wirzweli, you make your way to Wirzweli Horn and continue through the forest, with a gentle ascent to Gummenalp. If you choose the Tannen path for the descent, (+ 1.5 hours), you'll be rewarded with spectacular scenery.

Alpen Traum (Alpine Dream)
Wirzweli - Hinterhegen - Waldmattli - Frutt - Sulzmattli - Stanglisbühl - Wirzweli


You start right at the mountain station of the Dallenwil-Wirzweli cable car, and after about 10 minutes you'll be at the official starting point of the trail. Hike over snowy hills on your way to the cozy "Sulzmattli" mountain tavern. You continue along the winter hiking trail to Alp Frutt and Alp Waldmattli, where you can enjoy an idyllic view. A short climb brings you to Alp Langboden and a well-deserved snack at the restaurant at "Langbodenstubli." It's a gentle descent on the way back to Wirzweli. This tour is also ideal for families.

Sonnenweg (Sun Path)
Wirzweli - Gummenbahn - Hinterhegen - Ächerli - Seewli - Gummenbahn- Wirzweli.

Start at the cable car's mountain station and walk about a kilometer west toward the Gummenbahn valley station. From here, follow the signs for the "Sonnenweg".
The first portion leads over the bridge to Rohnengraben. After you pass Alphütte Rohnenmattli, you head left and on up to the teepee in Hinterhegen. From here you take the "Tannenpfad" trail for about 300 meters before heading up to Chienerenegg, where you'll find a breathtaking panorama. Then you go down to Alp Chieneren and on to Ächerlistrasse. After a while you take a right and cross a meadow and follow Kantonsstrasse for about 200 meters. Then you take the turn for Alp Chli Ächerli and follow the path to Älplerkreuz. The way back leads back down toward the valley to Alp Seewli, past two vacation homes over Hintere- (Alpkäserei) and Vordere Huismatt and back to Wirzweli. This is a wonderfully sunny trail and not too difficult, but don't underestimate its length.

Tannenpfad (Pine path)
Wirzweli - Gummenmattli - Hinterhegen- Gummenalp


This route starts after a 15-minute walk from the cable car's mountain station.
Follow the "Tannenpfad" signs over the brook and up through the snowy forest and up to the Gummenalp mountain restaurant. If you're tired, you can return via the four-person chair lift to Eggwald. From there it's just a 15-minute walk back to Wirzweli.

Arvi Trail
Wirzweli - Gummenmattli - Hinterhegen – Chüenerenegg – Holzwang – Chli Ächerli - Wirzweli

This is a challenging snowshoe experience in the middle of the dreamy alpine world. It begins after a 15-minute walk from the cable car's mountain station.
Follow the signs for the "Arvitrail," which you'll find to the left of the Gummenalp cable car valley station. You head up to Couloir beneath Langboden, and pn toweard Dürrenboden. You'll see a small forest and head on to "Weiher." At this point you'll face a substantial two-kilometer climb. Pass Alp Meierhütte on your left and kepp going toward the crossroads. Turn right and after 50 meters you'll be on the Arvigrat summer trail, also quite steep.

In the forest you'll see a log cabin; stay on the marked trail to the right and follow it to Chienerenegg, the trail's highest point at 1,533 meters above sea level. You continue along the steeply descending ridge until you reach the Aecherli pass. From here you'll be able to see the Holzwang Chapel (alt. 1,443 m).

Now it's time to head back to Wirzweli. At Aelplerkreuz you'll get a last view of Obwalden. Down on your left you can see Wirzweli, the Engelberger Aa valley and Maria Rickenbach. The trail leads to the Kantonsstrasse parallel to the "Sonnenweg," and on past Alp Chli Aecherli to Langboden Stubli, a little mountain tavern.
